The European Reassurance Initiative Is a Smart Response to Urgent Threats

As security threats increase in Europe, NATO must show it stands behind each of its members. President Barack Obama quadrupled funding for the European Reassurance Initiative (ERI) from almost $800 million in 2016 to $3.4 billion in the White House’s fiscal year 2017 budget request. Congress should approve the ERI not only to deter Russian aggression, but also to protect Europe’s southern flank against the Islamic State.
